Sixty members of the European Parliament from several political groups wrote to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on the evening of 26 October, asking her to call an urgent meeting of foreign ministers to agree sanctions on the Israeli government, WAFA reported.
The letter describes the West Bank closure since 23 October as collective punishment amounting to a war crime, and accuses Israel's government of seeking to entrench the occupation and raise tensions during its election. It cites demolitions in Hebron where some families had no more than five minutes to leave.
It asks the EU to condemn the measures and demand the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the West Bank. Belgium had already said after the Taybeh attack that it would push for EU sanctions on violent settlers and those who support them.
