Israeli authorities refused entry to a 23-member international delegation at the Allenby crossing on Tuesday, 27 October, Birzeit University said. The group was travelling to a conference on Global South solidarity at the university's Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies, which opened that day.
Members included British Labour MP Clive Lewis, former MP Sam Tarry, Scottish Green MSP Kate Nevens, SNP member Lara Bird and Spanish senator Josu Estarrona of EH Bildu. Organisers said they were held and questioned for several hours before being turned back.
The programme included meetings with students, academics and civil society groups, and days helping farmers with the olive harvest. The university linked the ban to wider restrictions on Palestinian academic institutions and called for their contact with the outside world to be protected.
