A PLO Executive Committee body overseeing UNRWA affairs said on 25 October it categorically rejects plans by the agency's management to make large-scale staff layoffs, WAFA reported. It urged the acting Commissioner-General to drop the plans and suspend related measures.

The committee said cuts would not solve UNRWA's financial crisis and would threaten education, health care, relief and social protection for Palestine refugees. It asked the agency to protect staff pay and consider alternatives put forward by refugee affairs officials, staff unions and experts.

It called for urgent international funding of about $70 million, mainly to pay salaries for November and December. The number of jobs at risk was not given. WAFA did not carry a response from UNRWA, and the agency's own figures on the planned cuts were not published in the report.
