Israel's national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, entered the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Monday, 26 October, the day before the Knesset election, under heavy police protection, WAFA reported. The Jerusalem Governorate said he was accompanied by Knesset member Moshe Feiglin.
It was at least his third entry in two months. On 31 August he performed prayers in the eastern part of the courtyards, and on 28 September he entered with Defence Minister Israel Katz during the Sukkot holiday, when settler visits increased, WAFA said. Netanyahu prayed at the Western Wall on the same Monday.
Ben-Gvir has openly backed expanding Jewish prayer at the site, which WAFA said raises fears of a change to its historical and legal status quo. Palestinian factions accused him of exploiting the measures against Palestinians for election campaigning. He voted the next morning in Kiryat Arba, the settlement beside Hebron.
