Dozens of settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound through the Maghariba Gate during the morning and afternoon visiting periods on Monday, 5 October, under the protection of Israeli police, the Qatar News Agency reported from occupied Jerusalem. Israeli police escorted the groups.
The Jerusalem Governorate said 11,409 settlers entered the compound during the Jewish holiday season and 52,277 since the start of the year. It said public prayers and rituals were held in the courtyards during the season under police guard. Palestinian media counted 174 entries on 4 October alone.
Palestinian officials say police-protected prayers in the courtyards are changing the status quo at the site, which covers 144 dunams. Egypt's foreign ministry condemned settler rituals inside the compound on 1 October. The figures come from Palestinian bodies and were not confirmed by Israeli police.
