Israeli police said on Monday, 19 October, that they had arrested ten people in the West Bank over the attacks on the Washington Post photographer and the French mayor, raiding several locations and seizing vehicles and other evidence. West Bank police commander Moshe Finchi said they were held on suspicion of involvement.
The arrests followed US calls for a crackdown. By Wednesday night, a Jerusalem court had ordered nine of the ten released to house arrest, according to the settler legal group Honenu. Police said one suspect remained in custody and the investigation was continuing.
Rights groups say arrests of settlers are rare when the victims are Palestinian. The Israeli group Yesh Din has documented 561 acts of settler or military violence against Palestinians since 27 September, more than 26 a day, and attacks continued after the arrests.
