Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree on Saturday, 10 October, cancelling the legislative election set for 28 November and scheduling presidential and legislative elections for 11 September 2027. The vote would have been the first parliamentary election since Hamas won in January 2006.

The decision followed a PLO Executive Committee ruling and a letter from Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh to France's foreign minister on 8 October saying the political, security and economic conditions for a vote had not materialised. Officials said Israel had not let election materials or observers into Gaza.

The decree said the delay would allow a comprehensive national dialogue to strengthen Palestinian unity. Critics, including candidates who spoke to the Jerusalem Post, said it protects the status quo. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar called Abbas a "corrupt dictator" and denied obstructing the vote.
