Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a temporary Israeli army checkpoint at the northern exit of Hebron at about 7:30am on Friday, 23 October. Two soldiers were killed and three wounded in an exchange of fire that lasted more than 20 minutes, the Israeli military said. Both attackers were shot dead.
The army named the soldiers as Staff Sgt. Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Sgt. Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, of a Home Front Command search and rescue battalion. The gunmen were identified as Mohammad and Firas Jaaba, both 27 and from Hebron. The military said it believed they had meant to reach Route 35 for a larger attack.
Reports place the checkpoint differently: Israeli outlets at Yehuda junction, Al Jazeera near Farsh al-Hawa. The shooting came four days before Israel's election, and Netanyahu cancelled political meetings to hold a security assessment with the army and intelligence chiefs. Three Israelis were also wounded.
