Israeli forces detained around 90 volunteers and activists helping Palestinian farmers harvest olives near Nahalin, west of Bethlehem, on Wednesday, 21 October, according to Rabbis for Human Rights. Among them was Brad Lander, the Democratic nominee for New York's 10th congressional district, who said he was held for about three hours.
Activists said troops declared the field a closed military zone about two hours into the harvest and detained the group even though they agreed to leave. Police said the army reported the harvest had not been coordinated with military authorities. Lander said the land was private Palestinian property and coordination was not required.
He was released with a warning and called for the release of several dozen others still held. Israel's foreign ministry accused him of harvesting headlines. Al Jazeera put the number detained at about 80; authorities had considered deporting foreign volunteers.
